Every family has its quirks, I know. But my family has such a unique combination of endearment and insanity that it would merit being made into a sitcom of the “Malcolm in the Middle” type. Since the sitcom never materialized, here are some comic depictions of our best moments.
As kids in the early 2000s, my brother and I would reread all the Harry Potter books that had come out up to that point during our summer holidays. We did not read any other books, no exaggeration there. As a future linguist, I eventually started spicing it up by reading Harry Potter in foreign languages (which I still do sometimes!). My Gen-Z sister prefers the movies (duh!). But there is something on which we do agree….
Pancakes are the hot stuff in my family. Are you bored? Pancakes. Do you crave something sweet? Pancakes. It’s 7 pm. Pancakes.
When I was a kid, my mom tried to recruit me to collect stones, pebbles, and shells with her, but I quickly got bored of it. Did you know most cool-looking beach pebbles don’t look so shiny anymore when they get dry?
My dad loves free stuff. When we were little, he would often bring random toys and stuff he found on the street. I still fondly remember a super tiny plastic toy toothbrush I used for my Barbies. We would wash these things before playing with them of course.
And before you judge my dad, he was just trying to save money on toys. Fortunately, today I have enough money to buy my LEGO from the store. :)
Let me know about the weird stuff your family does!
