On Medium, I often write about my ADHD experience through comics and humor, so it is only natural that that’s what I decided to talk about on Medium Day.
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) keeps trending on social media and it is clear why. Besides people like me who have clinical ADHD (diagnosed or not but debilitating), everyone can relate to at least some of the struggles that ADHDers face every day.
For example, all of us have procrastinated in school in one way or another, but when it comes to adult ADHD, we procrastinate with important adult things like figuring out some incomprehensible bureaucratic mess (I couldn’t even come up with an example here because I don’t know anything about bureaucracy [help!]).
When you have ADHD, what ends up happening is that important (boring) things often don’t get done on time. And as a result, you feel bad about yourself. These feelings of guilt and inadequacy are only heightened by the emotional dysregulation and other comorbid mental health conditions that often come with ADHD.
The reason we procrastinate in the first place is usually the perception that the task we have to do is boring (isn’t that “objectively” true when it comes to bureaucracy?). Anyway, as ADHDers we crave stimulation and avoid boredom at all costs, so we inevitably run into this cycle of not doing the thing and then feeling bad about not having done it. Is there a way to break this cycle?
I believe I have found just the right thing to break the cycle! It works for me at least, and during my tutorial on Medium Day we can figure out if it works for you too!
Through comic journaling, I make fun of how unable I am to complete the boring task at hand, and voilà! Simply creating a comic about my procrastination usually makes me stop procrastinating and the task gets miraculously completed. The perfect example is the comic below. Before sitting down to draw it, I was hungry and desperate, but after finishing the comic, I got up and made myself some dinner. You don’t believe me? Let’s try and do it together!
On Medium Day, I will reveal a very easy recipe for creating simply drawn comics based on autobiographical experiences. With this recipe, we will make sure that the intended humor is funny and who knows, maybe even shareable with others or on social media.
Prepare a paper and a pen because we will draw short comics together, based on our funny ADHD or mental-health experiences! And don’t worry about your drawing skills, stick women and men will suffice for this exercise :)
In Q&A, we will discuss the results of this method and how it worked or might work for you. I will also be curious to hear about any other creative methods you have found to deal with ADHD and other conditions.
Join me on August 12, 2:30PM ET/8:30PM CET! And don’t forget to register!
Can’t wait to see you all there!
