Give yourself permission to enjoy the holidays
Maybe you know exactly what to do this X-mas and don’t need anyone to tell you to enjoy the holidays. But if you are anything like me, December is also a stressful month in which everything needs to happen before the big day: the work needs to be finished, presents need to be bought (maybe also sent), family trips planned, and so on.
This year especially I feel like I am in an in-between space: the pandemic is still raging and we are trying to reduce contact, but we are also expected to go about our lives as in the pre-pandemic times. At least that’s what’s happening in Germany. It’s very confusing because I feel like going on a full-on lockdown Christmas spirit like I did last year, but I just don’t have time to do anything Christmasy. This post is my attempt to remedy that and a note to self that nothing is more important than enjoying X-mas this year.
Here are 4 cutesy things I am looking forward to doing in December, explained in comics. I hope you will too find time to enjoy them.
1. Enjoy the Christmas spirit and forget about work
We’ve all been there. Sooo many deadlines are before the end of the year. Or even without strict deadlines, we often feel that we should be done by the end of the year. It feels like a natural end to finish our main projects, but unfortunately that gives us little time to foster our Christmas spirit and enjoy choosing presents, baking cookies, decorating the Christmas tree, and all that good stuff.
Well, you know what? You should enjoy it. Just scratch work and enjoy your Christmas preparations. I’ll try to do that at least (as much as I’m allowed to).
2. Eat a lot of chocolate (Christmas is a perfect excuse)
Chocolate lovers are often shamed for “poor”* dietary choices. Well, Christmas is our time! Finally, a holiday that not only allows but encourages eating chocolate. So, don’t hold back and feast on chocolate this Christmas! I know I will.
*If you are having second thoughts about the health benefits of chocolate, choose dark chocolate, or even a 100% chocolate — no sugar, nothing, just pure cocoa, baby!
3. Get cozy and warm
One of my favorite parts (maybe also the only part?) about winter is that you can get cozy and warm. When you are all snuggled under blankets, drinking tea and eating cookies, maybe watching your favorite movies with your family, Christmas tree blinking in the background, that’s the best thing ever. Enjoy being allowed to do “nothing useful” and bond with your loved ones.
4. Figure out if Santa is real
Ok, this one is a bit of a joke, but I did always wonder what the different origins of Santa’s character are. I know he is loosely based on St. Nicholas and other folk figures, but what is the connection to Finnland and the North Pole? Maybe someone real inspired this story?* I have to do more research on that. In the meantime, I’ll welcome presents from real people and create some comic fiction about Santa.
*If you have any information on Santa’s origins, let me know in the comments.
Happy holidays and merry Christmas everyone! Don’t forget to enjoy them!
